Rules and Policies

The Subterranea RPIMUD is a free-to-play Role-Play Intensive Multi-User Domain that can be played exclusively online. Before you can play the game you have to register for a player account and then create a character. The following terms of registration explain the rules for our registration process and the use of your player account. By creating an account on our server you are assumed to have read and agreed to abide by the following rules, policies, and terms of service.

Prerequisites for Registration

You must be at least 13 years of age due to the content present in the Subterranea RPIMUD. While no part of the game is willfully profane or sexual in nature, the game does contain an element of simulated violence. We strive to maintain a PG-13 rating, and as such, any person under the age of 13 is forbidden from playing the game. No exceptions.

Multiplaying

The player account system restricts each player from playing more than one character at any time. Being in control of two or more characters at once, at any time, is forbidden. Those found using multiple player accounts to multiply will be detected by our system and flagged for investigation. If you are found to be multiplaying, the characters in quesstion will be deleted without remorse or compensation.

Role-Playing

The Subterranea MUD belongs to a special class of MUD known as an RPI, or Role-Play Intensive MUD. As such, role-playing is a strict requirement and all players are expected to role-play and remain in-character at all times when connected to the game. In addition, a measure of maturity is needed on the part of our players to make sure that in-character information is not leaked through out-of-character channels such as Instant Messaging, Discussion Forums, or neighborly chat. If you do not want to role-play, please select a different MUD to play as there are many that cater to hack-and-slash or player-versus-player scenarious. You can find excellent PvP games by visiting our friends at Edge Entertainment or by browsing the listings on the MUD Connector.

For our purposes, role-playing is more than just creating a character and running around the game world. Your character has a personality, a history, goals, and ideals. You should act as your character would act, in a realistic manner that is acceptable to your culture, race, location, and background. There is ample information available on this website to learn and understand the theme, concept, and background of the game. If you are unable to grasp the concept of role-playing, go pick another MUD, you won't be happy here, and we don't want you here. If you are an inexperienced role-player, do not fear, our players and staff are more than willing to help you become familiar with the game and the art of textual role-playing. All it takes is the willingness to learn and a little bit of common sense.

The following is a partial list of inappropriate play. Doing these things is cause enough for your character to be removed from play. We log every keystroke, and while we may not go through the logs daily, we do go through the logs and punish those who are conducting themselves inappropriately.

1) Actions intended purely to advance skills such as running scripts to continually repeat commands with no regard for the role-play involved in spending time practicing your skills.

2) Conducting yourself in an unrealistic manner such as walking into a village and attacking all the villagers who cross your path, trying to steal from someone who has already caught you stealing, practicing your combat skills with no regard for role-play, et cetera.

3) Code abuse such as exploiting known bugs to your benefit, or not-reporting bugs so that you can continue to take advantage of them.

4) Distracting other players from their sense of immersion with out-of-character conversation.

5) Continually petitioning the staff after you have been told to wait until someone is available to help you.

6) Abuse of other players via role-play relating to torture, rape, or other sexually explicit crimes. While we don't limit your role-play, torture and rape scenes should be stopped immediately upon the ooc request of any party involved. Sexual role-play is not permitted. If you want to go rut, do it with as few descriptive emotes as possible to conclude the scene.

7) Using out-of-character information to your advantage, or leaking in-character information to those who would have no way of knowing it through in-character means.

8) Quitting the game to avoid in-character confrontations with other players or ooc conversations with the staff regarding your character.

When inappropriate play is believed to have occured, our staff members each have full authority to take whatever measures they feel are appropriate to correct the situation. Violators may get a scolding, a lecture, or a friendly reminder. Violators may also have skills or crafts that are being misused removed, skill levels lowered, objects confiscated, in-character responses made by staff-controlled mobiles, et cetera. Repeat or overly rude rule-breakers may have their character removed from the game for a period of time, or permanently. In the case of anything more than a verbal warning, violators will receive an e-mail at your registered e-mail address explaining why any action against them was taken. In all cases, the verdict of the punishing staff member is final and appeals will only be considered if addressed in writing to the staff e-mail account. Decisions made regarding appeals are final.

Favoritism

Every online community gets its share of claims that the staff is showing favoritism toward certain players or groups of players. Our policy on favoritism is such... It will occur. There will no doubt be players that we see demonstrating their devotion and love for the game more than the average player does. They may go above and beyond in helping new players, or they may simply be outstanding role-players, or cheeerleaders who really help others get involved with ongoing plots. They may be overly insightful, helpful, friendly, or whatever. The point is, these players may be given opportunities or positions of trust that are not open to every player who joins the game.

No member of our staff strives to unbalance the game or neglect any player who is not standing out amongst the crowd. If you feel that another player is being treated differently by our staff then you are, ask yourself why that player is being treated differently? Rather than becoming angry, you might see that the player in question is doing positive things to make him or her stand out. If you start doing those same things, you're bound to be noticed too. Our best players should be role-models and examples that the rest of you want to strive to emulate. How can you make your character stand out?

When new positions of trust or positions open on our staff, the job is typically filled in-house rather than searching for talent elsewhere. If you have been a great role-player, obeyed our rules, and exceeded our expectations, you stand just as good a chance of getting that posittion as our other favorites do. If you are not selected, it doesn't mean that you won't be next time. If you feel that you are being overlooked, ask for a player review. Our staff will make a point to observe you playing the game.
