Welcome to Subterranea
The
creation of a new world is not a process that can be done alone.
The world of Subterranea is no exception.
While
the
Subterranea
novels
are a valuable tool for understanding the vision of Subterranea
as a whole, the world we are creating is a continually growing
and evolving
entity forged by many hands. It is through interdependence and
cooperation that we can combine our talents and abilities to create
something
greater together.
It is our hope that as a player of the Subterranea RPIMUD, you
will join us on this great journey. Your character is born into
the world that we have created, but it is through you that his
or her place in history shall be carved. More than any other type
of role-playing environment, your actions and inaction will shape
the world around you. Will you be one of the meek who goes unnoticed
as the cycles pass you by, or will you become a legend spoken of
in the yarns told to entertain and inspire children?
The
developmental period of the Subterranea RPIMUD began in the first
quarter of
2006.
While it would be easy to rush development,
our goal is to open the game for play-testing in a fully operational
state during the spring of 2007. Until this time, this website,
like the game itself, should be considered to be “Under Construction”.
The information found on this site is tentative, and subject to
change. We openly invite you to follow the development of the Subterranea
RPIMUD, encourage you to read the first full-length Subterranea
novel “In Shadow They Slumber”, and ask you to vote
for our project by joining the RPIMUD
Network and casting your
weekly vote for Subterranea.
If you are interested in working on the Subterranea project as
a programmer, builder, or role-play administrator, please contact
the project director by e-mail.
We would like to thank everyone in the RPI Community for your continued
support.
Understanding
Text-Based Role-Playing
Many
of you are familiar with the general concept of text-based MUDs,
however RPIMUDs are uniqie in that the emphasis is not on player-vs-computer
or player-vs-player combat. Role-play intensive MUDs require
the player to create a character that fits into the theme of
the game, and then act as that character would as life in that
world continues around you. Your character may be young or old,
common or uncommon, combat-oriented or entirely passive.
The
Subterranea RPIMUD has been painstakingly designed with attention
to detail. When you create your character you are born as a citizen
of one of the settlements in the Brysh Sovereignty. Most characters
begin play in their early adulthood, though they are presumed
to have been born and raised in their home settlement and be
a known part of that community. Your character will begin play
with some basic clothing and equipment, some spending money,
some basic skills, access to some communal assets, and little
else. Your first hours of play should be dedicated to getting
to know your home village and your fellow villagers. You will
likely want to visit local merchants to outfit yourself with
things not given to you, and you are advised to find gainful
employment to supplement your spending.
As
you play, you'll see various stories unfolding around you. Keep
your eyes and your ears open for opportunities to join in the
fun with other players. If you find life in your village a little
dull, then you are free to pack a bag and travel. Every village
in the Brylands has its own unique population, cultures, and
specialties. Trade is an often-lucrative occupation, which also
grants you the opportunity to travel. While the Brylands are
kept relatively safe by the warders and wardens that uphold the
Lord Martyr's laws, you should remember that just as you may
have found yourself in the role of a farmer, craftsman, or trader,
there are those who have found themselves in the roles of brigands
and highwaymen. If you encounter such a scoundral, look at the
opportunity to role-play with them before you fight or flee.
Even the most dangerous scoundral welcomes the chance to role-play
with you even if they intend on robbing you in the process.
Before long,
you will have made friends, made enemies, and found your lot
in life.
You'll know the background of the game, the lay
of the land, and the next time you come across a new player
it will be you that they look to for guidance and understanding.
Always treat new players well, they are our most valuable resource.
Getting
Help
This
website is intended to provide you with everything you need to
know to play the Subterranea RPIMUD, except for the experience
that comes with doing so. Within these pages you'll find a wealth
of information. Key areas of importance to new players are listed
in the 'Getting Started', "Player's
Guide to Subterranea', and
'Frequently Asked Questions'
sections. In addition to the information provided within those
documents,
we encourage our players to read
the Subterranea novels beginning with "In
Shadow They Slumber".
These books provide an excellent glimpse at the world, the people,
the places,
and
both
historic
and recent
events.
In
addition, the game staff is available to help you whenever they
are online. You can see members of the staff who are available
at any given time in the game by typing 'who' and then using
the 'petition' command to speak with them out-of-character. The
'ooc' command is provided as a way for you to speak with your
fellow players regarding questions and mechanics of the game.
Please do not use it as a way to gossip or chat. Remember, as
a player one of your goals should be to remain in-character at
all times.
Beyond
this, questions can be sent to the project director by clicking
here. All such questions are typically responded to within 24
hours.
A
final resource at your disposal is the RPIMUD Network at http://www.rpimud.com.
There you will find numerous players who are familiar with role-playing
in RPI-environments. You are welcome to contact them directly
or by way of the RPIMUD Network forums.
